TCRP believes that legal advocacy and litigation are critical tools to protect and advance the civil rights of everyone in Texas, particularly our State’s most vulnerable populations, and to effect positive and lasting change to law and policy. TCRP’s Voting Rights team works to make sure every eligible Texan is able to cast a ballot that counts. We use litigation and advocacy to knock down barriers to voter registration, support grassroots voter mobilization efforts, and oppose new attempts to suppress voting. From the courts to the legislature to the polling place, we’re fighting for access to democracy for every one of our Texas neighbors. One of the biggest pieces of that work is our Election Protection Program. 

We work with the other non-profits in the Texas Election Protection Coalition to provide non-partisan customer service to any Texas voter who calls in. No question is too big or too small! Our efforts include operating toll-free hotlines in multiple languages to answer voters’ questions, training and deploying hundreds of legal and grassroots volunteers to spot issues during Early Vote and on Election Day, using digital tools to connect with voters, and having legal counsel on hand to fight for voting rights in court. 

Texas Election Protection is a huge system with a lot of moving parts, and we’re looking for an organizer who can work on a lot of different parts of it. We need a sharp mind who likes to build systems and organize data to help our EP team and volunteers untangle complex issues for voters. Along with that sharp mind, we need a people person who enjoys training volunteers and doesn’t hate answering volunteer questions! This is a temporary position from June 1, 2024 to December 1, 2024 and is excluded from the Bargaining Unit according to TCRP’s Collective Bargaining Agreement with the National Organization of Legal Service Workers (UAW Local 2320). 


Overview of Key Responsibilities:

Our Election Protection Outreach Coordinator will be a key part of all Election Protection activities in 2024. The main pieces of this will be:

  • Assist in recruiting, training, and deploying legal and field volunteers for TCRP’s Election Protection efforts,
  • Develop relationships with partner organizations, businesses, and individuals, onboard them onto our Election Protection efforts, and coordinate with them throughout the duration of the Election Protection Program,
  • Ensure that all of our volunteers have an excellent experience and that their information is captured and documented,
  • Take the lead in running the logistics and planning for our Election Protection training program across the state,
  • Track, compile, and analyze data for reporting to our coalition, Board of Directors, Leadership, and other stakeholders,
  • Coordinate with the rest of the TCRP Community Engagement Department and the TCRP Voting Rights Team regarding the Election Protection Program,
  • Serve as a spokesperson as needed for our media efforts.


Characteristics of ideal candidates:

  • Ability to build strong relationships across diverse communities—including in particular communities of color, immigrant communities, and persons with disabilities—and across different teams internally
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including willingness and ability to do public speaking and press hits (with press training from TCRP)
  • Experience in organizing, managing, and deploying volunteers with either a campaign or grassroots organization
  • Ability to juggle and prioritize across multiple projects without dropping any balls
  • Ability to take initiative, solve problems, and quickly jump onto urgent matters as they come up
  • Ability to inspire people to take action, including telling a compelling story about why this work is important
  • Familiarity with event planning and an understanding of what it takes to put together a successful event (training, community events, etc.)
  • Willingness and ability to learn technology quickly and make it work for your program
  • Ability to read, write, and speak in a second language is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Mobilize, EveryAction, and the major social media platforms is a plus.

Compensation

Like all TCRP salaries, the outreach coordinator’s salary will be based on years of experience, starting at $55,836.  TCRP also offers excellent benefits, professional development opportunities and a deep commitment to a meaningful work-life balance. Benefits include: employer-paid health insurance, four weeks paid vacation, eight weeks paid family leave (with avenues to extend leave to 14 weeks in total), a $500 professional development budget annually, and extensive holidays, including a winter break between December 25th and New Year’s Day.

Prospect Research Associate - Hybrid Work Available (Remote in Texas)


Overview 

The Texas Civil Rights Project (TCRP) is a community lawyering organization boldly serving the movement for equality and justice in and out of the courts and seeking to advance a vision of a Texas where all communities can thrive with dignity and justice and without fear. 


The Prospect Research Associate proactively leads prospect research initiatives for front-line Development staff. Specifically, the Prospect Research Associate identifies and researches new and existing donors and prospects for moves management into mid-level or major gifts file. The Prospect Research Associate will provide information, data, and analysis to support effective fundraising, data-driven decision-making, and strategic planning for donor engagement and fundraising priorities for TCRP. The Prospect Research Associate is a key member of TCRP’s Development team and reports directly to TCRP’s Development Database Manager.

TCRP comprises three regional offices across Texas with over 40 employees and an annual budget of over $7 million. TCRP operates under a hybrid work policy, allowing full remote work from anywhere in Texas and requiring travel and in-person attendance for specified work activities. The in-person activities are typically based out of any of TCRP’s locations: Alamo (in the Rio Grande Valley), Austin, and Houston. Exceptions to required in-person activities can be made based on a case-by-case basis.


 

Job Duties:

Prospect Identification and Research 

  • Identify potential prospects and existing major donors not yet identified who have the propensity and capacity to support the mission of TCRP to grow the prospect pool through research
  • Perform proactive and reactive, extensive, high-quality prospect research on individuals, any related foundations, and corporations 
  • Leverage technology and use a wide variety of strategies and sources, including biographical, organizational, and financial sources, as well as online databases, websites, libraries and government sources, and other external repositories of public information
  • Evaluate and synthesize accumulated information to assess financial capacity, philanthropic tendencies, giving propensity, and connections to TCRP’s mission
  • Author and provide thorough, accurate, timely, and strategic information, including profiles and biographies, on prospective donors to TCRP, with an emphasis on major gift prospects, for potential fundraising cultivation and solicitation
  • Assume primary responsibility for gathering information and meeting prospect research needs of philanthropy staff

 

Prospect Administration 

  • Work closely with the Development Database Manager and other departmental team members to coordinate and ensure they are regularly informed of prospects for their respective fundraising efforts
  • Participate in portfolio review sessions and team meetings to review the pool of prospects and make portfolio recommendations to philanthropy staff
  • Assist with developing targeted prospect lists by curating and managing prospect segments for specific objectives
  • Assist Development staff in researching background information, statistical and analytical information to support the production of fundraising materials
  • Develop and maintain a tracking system of prospect research and the pipeline of prospects and produce regular reports and any other necessary reports
  • Regularly provide the Development Database Manager with information and reports of the prospect program and progress, including newly identified prospects, and any obstacles

 
Data Integrity 

  • Preserve and maintain prospect knowledge, including ratings, interests, and connections acquired through research in TCRP’s database, currently through EveryAction, that is accessible to philanthropy staff and used to develop future cultivation strategies
  • Maintain the accuracy and completeness of prospect data by regularly auditing and cleaning prospect management data in TCRP’s database, currently through EveryAction
  • Ensure that all prospect research files, including supporting documents, are uploaded and organized in organizational files, currently ShareFile
  • Seek the most effective research resources and systems from internal and external sources, while managing in-house information and reference sources, like online database services and news subscriptions
  • Assist with general database support and projects, as needed on a limited basis, based on team capacity

 
Communication and Engagement 

  • Assure that all deliverables and communication maintain the highest professionalism standards
  • Build and maintain productive and professional relationships with staff 
  • Remain current on fundraising best practices related to prospect research and development
  • Maintain compliance with the professional and ethical standards established by the Association of Fundraising Professionals and Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement
  • Represent TCRP at meetings, conferences, and fundraising events, as appropriate, or assist in the coordination of TCRP attendance

 
Characteristics of Ideal Candidates:

  • 1+ year of professional experience in development in a nonprofit environment
  • Communicates, both written and orally, in a clear, thorough and concise manner
  • Ability to understand the interests of prospects to equip philanthropy staff to develop relationships

Compensation 

The salary for this position will be based on years of experience and range from $51,084 to $67,122.

This position is FLSA-exempt and does not qualify for overtime compensation. A minimum of 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, are expected.

If you’re looking for hardcore litigation experience or tons of deep dives into case law, this job may not be for you! But if you want to become an expert in Texas election law so you can train other attorneys to do the same, meet and build trust with county election officials, and untangle complex issues for voters, then we want you to join our team! If you don’t mind picking up pizza for trainings, helping pack t-shirts for volunteers, and meeting tons of like-minded Texans, that would be a huge bonus.

○ Identify and respond to problems affecting the right to vote in different areas of Texas;

○ Use a variety of strategies including demand letters, press strategies, connections, and coalition work to resolve those problems; and

○ Help track, compile, and analyze data for reporting to our coalition, Board of Directors, Leadership, and other stakeholders.

Problem-solve Election Protection issues as a team:

○ Build relationships and collaborate with partner organizations and county election officials to help elections run smoothly and voters cast their ballots;

○ Work within the Election Protection team and the TCRP team as a whole to provide the best possible legal resolutions to voters’ problems; and 

○ Chase down every avenue of solutions to the problems that Texas voters face.


Characteristics of ideal candidates:

● JD required, though Texas bar certification is not required at the time of hiring;

● Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including willingness and ability to do public speaking and press hits (with press training from TCRP);

● The ability to communicate legal information to non-lawyers;

● Ability to read, write, and speak in a second language is a plus.

● Experience in organizing, managing, and deploying volunteers;
